Born in Prince George, BC, Michael moved to Vancouver in 2001. After finishing his Bachelor of Commerce at Royal Roads University, he worked for various companies doing both business planning and financial analysis. Michael started with Odlum Brown in 2007 and now combines his previous skills with Odlum Brown’s extensive resources to provide quality investment advice to individuals, families, business owners and corporations. His designations include Canadian Investment Manager (CIM), Chartered International Wealth Manager (CIWM) and is a fellow of the Canadian Securities Institute (FCSI®) which is the highest honour and most senior credential in the Canadian financial services industry.

Krista is an Investment Assistant. Having been part of Odlum Brown’s Client Services department for eight years, Krista gained valuable experience in several different roles. This knowledge is significantly beneficial in her role facilitating account administration, client correspondence and supporting the team.

Sabrina Cho joined the team in 2022 as an Administrative Assistant. Having worked in a similar capacity at a large financial institution locally, her knowledge in the financial services sector is a great benefit to the team and our clients.

Our Process

Each new client is special to us and we take the responsibility of caring for your investments very seriously. Our priority is to put your needs first by providing investment advice and support that is specifically tailored to your investment objectives and risk tolerance.

Our team follows a four-step process that includes an in-depth discussion, creating an investment plan, regular monitoring of the portfolios and regular reviews with clients.

Staying in contact with our clients is very important to us, and as a client you can you can expect to receive the following:

  • Monthly Odlum Brown Report (optional)
  • Quarterly Portfolio Reviews sent via your preference of email or post
  • Quarterly letter reflecting on market trends, written by Michael Suen
  • Annual Reviews conducted in-person or over the phone
  • Annual Review and Outlook, written by Michael Suen, sent every January via email or post
  • Invitation to our Annual Address presentation series
  • RRSP and TFSA contribution updates and other important reminders throughout the year

We strive to be proactive and along with the items above, our team will be in contact whenever we see an opportunity to help you reach you investment goals.

Investment Philosophy

Our investment style closely follows Odlum Brown's contrarian investment philosophy. This includes buying when the crowd is negative and selling into excessive optimism. Our investment style is value-based and we care deeply about valuation and the price paid for an investment. We think of a stock as part ownership in a business, rather than a piece of paper upon which to speculate. We like companies with good growth potential, but recognize that the best prices are realized by buying companies when they are experiencing a hiccup or some kind of fundamental weakness.

Discretionary Investment Management

Along with our investment advisory capacity, Michael also offers and encourages discretionary investment management. This is primarily for investors who wish to delegate the day-to-day management of their investment portfolio while leaving their time and mind free for other pursuits.

Instead of paying commissions on a per transaction basis, a portfolio management fee is levied as a percentage of the assets under administration and charged monthly. Unlike traditional commissions, management fees on non-registered investment accounts may be deductible for income tax purposes. Account minimums apply.

Serving Clients

We believe that each client is unique and we spend the time understanding your individual needs. Odlum Brown clients receive exclusive access to reports produced by the firm’s highly regarded Research Department and consultation on matters of financial, retirement and estate planning, through Odlum Brown Financial Services Limited.

Financial Planning

Financial planning is more than building an investment portfolio; it is a comprehensive review of all the moving parts of your financial life. Having a well-defined financial plan helps guide and strengthen your investment portfolio.

To accomplish in-depth planning, we work with our team of specialists at Odlum Brown Financial Services Limited, the firm’s wholly owned subsidiary whose services are available exclusively to Odlum Brown clients. Areas we can assist with include:
