My Role

As a Portfolio Manager, I focus on managing the investable assets of individuals, families, corporations, charities and trusts on a discretionary basis. I often work with my clients’ other professional advisors, such as accountants and lawyers, to ensure there is an inclusive and holistic approach to growing and preserving their wealth. With almost 20 years’ experience in the accounting and investment industries, I am proud to continue helping my clients achieve their financial goals.

Client Commitment

I commit to an open-door policy with my clients and do my best to exceed their expectations. In order for my clients to feel confident in their investment plan, they have to trust that their wealth is being managed with their best interests in mind, and trusting me is the foundation of their confidence. Through clear and consistent communication, at a frequency determined by my clients’ needs, I work hard to build and maintain their trust, allowing our relationship to grow – sometimes over generations.

The Investment Process

I begin the investment process by assessing a client’s current situation. This includes exploring their investment goals, time horizon and any potential barriers. Once the landscape has been formalized, I construct a customized investment portfolio with an appropriate asset mix based on the client’s unique investment objectives and individual risk tolerance. Then the plan is implemented, and the portfolio is monitored, with adjustments being made when necessary. I conduct regular portfolio reviews to ensure that the client’s investments remain aligned with their current situation and long-term goals.

Equity portfolio adjustments are based on changes in client circumstances and guided by recommendations from our equity research team and their value-based investment philosophy. I also utilize a laddered approach to fixed income investing, relying on the expertise of our fixed income team, unique client circumstances and market conditions to determine the duration of the fixed income portion of a client’s portfolio.

The key to ensuring our investment recommendations are always based on our clients’ best interests is the Odlum Brown’s employee-owned and independent structure.

Financial Planning

At Odlum Brown, we are fortunate to be able to work with our wholly owned subsidiary, Odlum Brown Financial Services Limited (OBFSL), to assist with our clients’ insurance, estate and other financial planning needs. Being a CERTIFIED FINANCIAL PLANNER® practitioner and having previously worked in the accounting field, I have a good foundational knowledge of all aspects of my clients’ investment management requirements, and I am able to quarterback conversations, as required, with our OBFSL team. Understanding that individual financial situations can become quite complex, I am confident working with, and recommending, outside professional advisors if needed, based on each client’s situation.

Discretionary Portfolio Management

My focus is on discretionary portfolio management, which allows my clients to leave the day-to-day investment decisions in my hands, giving them more time to focus on their own career, business, family or dream retirement. Clients receive regular updates on their portfolio's holdings, strategic changes and market developments. To ensure our interests are aligned, a fee is charged on the basis of asset allocation and assets under administration.

Community Involvement

Giving back to the community is important, both to Odlum Brown and to me. I focus my community efforts on areas I am extremely passionate about. As a multiple-term Director and President of the Fraser Valley Mountain Bikers Association, I take pride in advocating for, building and maintaining trails that all members of our community can enjoy on foot and bikes. I believe in the importance of good mental health, and that the outdoors and physical fitness are a key to achieving this. Accessible and well-maintained trails are a useful tool and fundamental to a healthy and thriving community.

I am also a member and past Director of the Rotary Club of Chilliwack Fraser and support many of their fundraising and community initiatives. I have also participated in many endurance-related cycling events, raising money for mental health awareness and cancer-fighting cures, and have completed a one-day 360km bike ride on multiple occasions for such causes. Throughout the year, I participate in and sponsor various bike races around the province, with partial proceeds from these events going to support local charities and non-profits.

When I’m not participating in work, community, cycling or family commitments, I am an avid reader of finance-related, history and other non-fiction books.
