Portfolio Manager, Investment Advisor

Telephone: (250) 952-7778 | [email protected]

Bruce began his career in the financial industry in 1967 with the Royal Trust Co. After nine years, he left his position as Senior Trust Officer to join Odlum Brown as an Investment Advisor. His hard-earned success as an Investment Advisor led to his appointment as Branch Manager of the Victoria office in 1982. He is currently a Portfolio Manager, Investment Advisor.

Bruce continues to remain active within the community. His interest in rugby led him to be a member and former director of the James Bay Athletic Association and a past President of the Canadian Rugby Foundation. As a past board member of the Queen Alexandra Hospital Society, The Salvation Army Advisory Committee and the Lodge at Broadmead, Bruce proudly dedicates his time and financial support to charitable endeavours in the Greater Victoria Region. He is the current president of the Charlton L. Smith Charitable Foundation.

Bruce remains physically active by playing golf at the Victoria Golf Course, alpine skiing in the winter months, kayaking, lawn bowling, and embarking on outdoor adventures with his two sons and four grandchildren.

Bruce is committed to his clients' financial well-being and appreciates their loyalty. He looks forward to maintaining these strong relationships and providing the high standards of service his clients deserve as he guides the transition of his business to Heather in the coming years.

Heather joined the Odlum Brown Victoria office in 2014, quickly rising to the position of Portfolio Manager while working alongside Bruce McFarlane. In 2020, amidst a global pandemic, Heather and Bruce embarked on a partnership approach as a first step towards a long-term transition plan for Bruce, ensuring loyalty and protection for his valued clients. As part of their ongoing objective to work with their clients for generations, these plans solidify their commitment to their clients and serve to reinforce their long-standing track record of excellence. Heather looks forward to serving you for many, many years to come.

In addition to Heather’s breadth of experience with Odlum Brown, her educational pursuits have primed her perfectly for a career in this industry. Heather graduated with a B.A. in Economics from the University of Victoria, a Certificate in Professional Accounting from Camosun College, and holds both the CERTIFIED FINANCIAL PLANNER® and prestigious Chartered Financial Analyst designations.

Heather is well versed in investment management strategies, and shares Bruce’s commitment to discipline and patience. Heather’s strong belief in long-term planning, combined with Bruce’s experience, has influenced their collaborative business style. At Odlum Brown, Heather has the capacity to create a unique solution for every client and address individual needs. She approaches investment planning from a holistic standpoint, incorporating all stakeholders to ensure that her clients receive well-rounded advice for the benefit of their overall financial picture, not only for their current investment portfolio. This often means turning to Odlum Brown Financial Services Limited to assist with financial planning, including tax and estate planning. In this way, Heather can help clients reach their goals in both working life and retired life, while guiding them through every transition in between.

Outside of work, Heather keeps busy. Her young son loves to throw frisbees with his dad while Heather tries her hand (largely unsuccessfully) at gardening! Horses and equestrian sport have always been a passion, and the belief that horses are good for the soul has led her to serve on the Board of Directors of the Victoria Therapeutic Riding Association. Heather maintains her own equestrian pursuits as well and can often be found riding or competing with her own horse, Carma.
